If you live in a hard water area, there is no reason why you cannot enjoy the many benefits of softened water.

As you can see from the map, many more people live in hard water areas than soft. If you want to know how hard your local water is, simply ask our local demonstrator to test your water.

Facts about hard water

How does water become hard?

This depends on the surrounding geology. Rainwater is naturally soft, it becomes hard by soaking through chalk and limestone and dissolving some of the minerals.

Below is a graph showing the official government figures on the percentage of fuel wasted with the build up of scale. Just 1.5mm of scale will reduce the efficiency of a boiler by nearly 10%.

How do water softeners work?

A water softener works by forcing hard water into a tank of millions of tiny beads of special resin. As hard water passes over the beads a process known as ion exchange occurs and this causes the water to become soft. Every so often (this depends on the hardness of the water and the amount of water used), the resin becomes exhausted and the regeneration process begins. The regeneration process is achieved by flushing the resin with salt water and is a common process for all water softeners.

Water softeners are now compact enough to fit under a sink-top, are efficient, low on maintenance and are easily affordable to buy or rent. A water softener will save you money by:-

  • Reducing maintenance costs on washing machines, dishwashers, showers, kettles, in fact every appliance that uses water.
  • Save over 50% on soaps, shampoos, bubble baths, shower gels, detergents and cleaners.
  • No need to buy descaling products. Showerheads and kettles will remain scale free, your sink, washbasin and bath will also be free of scale and scum marks.
  • No need to replace plumbing, softened water will dissolve all the existing scale.

  • With a scale free hot water cylinder, it can produce its maximum volume of water more quickly and by using less energy.
